I'm hoping to hear from the Lynx guys since I'm not really sure if there is anything that can be done without sending these in for service.  I'm having a few really weird problems:

-Started up Aurora 16 to play back a stereo bounced file- and noticed vocals only coming out of the left (main output #1).  After further investigation noticed the signal was coming out of the right (main output #2) but it was very quiet even though the meters on the AES16e software mixer seemed to be normal.  I noticed the file was 44.1 but Aurora was locked at 88.1 (even tho playback did not sound sped up) and could not be changed.  Powered everything down and double checked the cabling.  Tried again and this time the problem was flipped- Hardly any signal coming out of the left, right was normal.

Reset AES16e mixer and the Aurora 16 to factory defaults.  Everything working again... sample rate issue back to normal too.

-Next day, I notice the same audio problem but not such a drastic disparity- left side slightly louder (sample rate was ok this time).  I started pulling down the fader for main out #1 and notice there is nothing coming out of the right.  Then I turned up the right main out #2 fader a little a BOOM signal is live again.  Sound seems to be normal after doing this, but that is quite a strange "fix".

-Throughout all of this I have noticed that the meters on the aurora16 show main out #1 louder (brighter LED) than output #2.  As a test I sent signal to 3 & 4 and #4 was louder (brighter).  This was the SAME file being played back.

Can someone from Lynx offer any help?  Do I need to send these units in for a checkup?  They've worked great since 2009, but now every time I power up and hear weird stuff in a mix I'm checking whether monitoring is malfunctioning- the last place I want my focus to be during music production.  It's difficult for me to call support since your office closes before I can be back in front of the DAW.

Thanks in advance for reading my saga. Smile

Hi Dave,

Have some questions:

1. Mac or PC?
2. What is your clocking setup?
3. When the problem came back, did Lynx Mixer still look OK?
4. Is it "just" levels or is there also distortion?
5. When the problem came back, was sample rate mismatched too?
6. Is this with ASIO or WDM apps?
7. Is it any and all apps, even iTunes, Media Player, etc.?
8. Do you power down from the Aurora front panel or a main power switch?

Thank you.

Hi Mike,

1.  PC, Windows 7 64bit, i7 965 with 12 gigs of RAM, x58 chipset
2.  AES16e set to internal, Aurora set to AES A
3.  Yes Lynx mixer panel looked fine, same as always
4.  Only levels, no distortion
5.  No, sample rate was only mismatched the first time, wasn't a problem after factory reset
6.  Both
7.  Pro Tools 9 and Windows Media Player
8.  Front panel always

Smile

Do the AES16e levels look off (from Outputs page of Lynx Mixer)?
What if you set the Aurora to TO DIGITAL OUT = "AES In", then recording that signal back in to a new track, thus bypassing the converters. Do the levels look OK then?

Hi Paul!

The meters in the AES16e mixer look perfect.  I just tried your test.  The file that's coming back in looks and sounds as expected.  So the only problem at the moment is the LED's - left side (main out 1 & 3) is brighter than the right side (2 & 4) but the actual sound is playing back correctly for the time being.  I also double checked on headphones and the stereo imaging sounds correct despite what I'm seeing on the LEDs.  Is it possible to force a factory reset on the LEDs?  Perhaps they need to be replaced?

My main concern is that the original problems will resurface when clients are here.  Do you think it would help if I sent the Aurora & AES16e in for a checkup?

Dave,
The LEDs on the Aurora are an approximation at best. The meters in the Lynx Mixer are a vastly better source for true level passing through the system.
You might try the same test as before, but set TO DIGITAL OUT to "ANALOG IN", loop analog outputs to analog inputs, and see if the same behavior occurs.

No problem to send the unit in to have us look at, Just send your name, address, phone number, and serial numbers to support@lynxstudio.com
