Topic: pops and clicks when recording Posted: May/03/2012 at 6:33am |
Hi, I recently changed from Windows XP to 7 and noticed that my recordings are experiencing significant pops and clicks. I am using the latest Lynx driver and firmware. I use Audacity to digitise LPs. This setup (comprising Pc and L22 card) has beeen working well for years, before the recent change to W7, so I'm guessing that this may be the culprit. If it is a driver issue, is there a chance that this can be fixed? If not, are there any practical solutions? Like using a different recording program, even one that isn't free, like Audacity? Going to an OS other than W7 would be the least preferred option. Thanks for any suggestions, Dragan

Hi Dragan,
Please check the Windows Power Profile in the Power Options section of Control Panel and set it to "High Performance" if it is not set to that.
Let us know if this helps.
What sample rate and buffer size are you using?

Thanks Mike, will try that later at home.
I am aware that W7 has been causing problems to many folks and have seen a few topics on several forums, most of them more than a year old now. I would just like to add that I have no problems playing music, only recording. For playback, I use JRiver MC 16, and have not had any issues at all (playing both 24/96 and redbook files). In that respect, the system works like a charm.
So, I'm not sure if it's an Audacity issue or L22, but it's definitely a combination of the two. Again, it all used to work extremely well a few months ago, and I'd like to get back to that same level of performance.
Thanks in advance for any more suggestions / ideas,
Dragan

Also, are you using the analog or digital inputs on the L22? Current drivers?

I'm using analog inputs (straight from the phono stage) and the most current drivers (re-installed everyhting yesterday). All this worked fine a few months ago - the only changes that I made were W7 and Audacity 2.0. As I said, combination...
I'm not sure how to change the memory buffer setting that Mike suggested?
Thanks,
Dragan

Another observation, if it's of any use: the sound is closer to scratching than single click/pop, and follows more closely the higher frequencies in the recording.

I see. What is the motherboard in your system? What happens if you record into the Lynx Demo program, from the Lynx Studio Technology program group, instead of Audacity?
The power mode referenced by Mike can be adjust from Power Options in the Windows Control Panel.

Thanks Paul - This computer (in the present hardware setup) has been working fine for at least 3 years, with the only difference now being updates to W7, Lynx drivers and Audacity 2.0. It plays all files fine, but recording is the problem. Where would I adjust the buffer size?

Latest update - I just reset the power settings and the scratching noise has disappeared. I never would have guessed that the card would be so sensitive to this setting. Thanks very much for taking and interest and your prompt responses, both Paul and Mike. Keep up the good work, Dragan

Dragan, In Win7 voltage can be scaled to the slots and CPU in order to conserve power. This can be lethal to a realtime application like with audio. The power settings are an important tweak really for any Win7 based DAW...
