I have the AES16e with an Aurora 8. I have a problem with the AES 16e losing sync when I load a new song in my DAW (Cubase 6.5) or sometimes load a plugin such as Massive. If I go to the control panel, change the buffer size and close everything is ok (doesn't matter which direction I go with the buffer, could be at 256 and go to 128 it still works) I've tried everything I can think of, newest drivers and firmware, refitting in a new PCIe slot, checked cables. If someone could give me an idea of likely causes I could try a few things out, at the moment it's driving me bonkers....

The Aurora is locked to the AES A of the AES16 @ 48/24bit. Seems to go through the checking, flashing green light Ok and then locks solid green. I also use a Benchmark DAC for my monitoring. I notice on the mixer there's a constant red error box with a number '1' not sure whether that's significant. I have a PC/i7 based computer.

Do you know the make and model of motherboard? Do you lose audio when that single dropout occurs?

Many thanks for your reply, I've been away so not been able to get back to you! I can't find the name of the motherboard, I've just downloaded CPU-Z so will be able to later. For now though, I've noticed that watching the lynx mixer while Cubase loads, the mixer shows red errors in each channel just as the song loads up. Depending on how many channels are active in the connections area of Cubase, that's how many channels show error. The Lynx demo playback device has no problems playing, and clears the error message in the mixer when I load up a song (having closed Cubase obviously) Could it be a memory problem? I have 6 gb of memory running Windows 7 64 bit.

It's not memory, I just got 4 more gb and same thing. One other thing, when the errors have registered it's impossible to change the internal sync mode to external. When the error messages have cleared (they clear as well when I enter a new setup preset of outputs in the connections page in Cubase!) there's no problem going to external sync and Cubase works normally. It's just the loading of a song or the loading of a new software instrument

Could you take a screen shot of the errors in the Lynx Mixer that you are referring to? Is this on the Adapter page or Record/Play? Check in Cubase if you have "release asio driver in background" checked. See if unchecking it makes a difference.

Not in the studio at the moment, the studio computer is offline but I'm pretty sure the 'release audio' button has been always unchecked. I'll get the screenshots to you but it happens in the 'record play' window. Like I say, having the mixer window always on top so i can see it when Cubase loads (or Protools which I checked yesterday, also happens) the red errors immediately come on as the song opens (they're not there as the program loads, only after I've selected a song to open and only those channels that have been selected in the connections window within Cubase/protools setup) Clicking ok in the buffer window clears the errors and I can use Cubase normally until I change song or sometimes (not all the time) load a new software instrument. After the error messages have happened the audio is broken up like I've lost sync until I click ok in the buffer window (I don't actually have to change to a new buffer size)and all is ok.

OK - so this is an X58 chipset boards. SOme of those have been problematic, but the latest AES16e firmware generally resolves that. Check in the Lynx Mixer: Mixer > About Lynx Mixer, and see if your firmware rev is in fact 12.3
It does seem to be a basic bus level communication issue. You might check in your computer bios and disable CPU speedstep if it is present. Also, change your Windows Power Profile to "High Performance".
DO you have any other DAW software that you can try this with?

So I checked the revision and it is 12.3. I disabled CPU speedstep in the bios and changed power profile to "High Performance" still not happy, still errors on load of song. I do have another interface (though it is Firewire!) an MR816x which works fine - don't know what that proves!
I don't have another PC to check the card in though I suppose I could take it to a techy.

Have you tried turning Double-Buffer on in the Lynx ASIO Control Panel? That should keep the dropouts from happening, but you still might hear an audible glitch when you load a plugin or new song.
The dropout is telling you that the application didn't service the buffer fast enough. If you have the buffer size set to 256 and you are running at 44.1kHz, the application has 5.8ms to service each buffer. If it takes more than 11.6ms, then you will get a dropout. Turning double buffer on increases that to 92.8ms before a dropout occurs (but you will still hear a glitch at 11.6ms, which shouldn't be a real problem since you are just loading a song and not doing real playback).

David,
no I hadn't tried it and yes that seems to do the trick as far as the dropouts are concerned. The main thing that was driving me bonkers was the loss of sync when this happened (loading songs/softsynths) so this is a great relief. I'm assuming it's ok to continue working like this and not think about the computer?
Should I ever get a new computer is there anything in the support area where you recommend motherboards that are known to be totally compatible?
