Topic: Multichannel 24/96 failurePosted: March/16/2012 at 2:10pm |

Setup 1: Win7 64 with L2B->LS-AES expansion->A8. A8 clock set as Int and connected to the L2B sync port Setup 2: Win7 64 with L2B->Aurora Interface Kit->A8. A8 clock set as Int. I have never upgraded A8 firmware (not able to start ARC...), but pressing PWR+TRIM makes LEDs flash sequentially >15 times, indicating Firmware>v13 (right?).
On my old computer, setup 1 worked perfectly. A couple of weeks ago, I build a new computer, and installed setup 1. All seemed to work as before, but multichannel 96kHz and higher sample rates suddenly stops playing with a harsh sound. Then everything goes silet (the media player also stops playing, and I have tried several players with same result). Recycle STOP and PLAY restarts playback, and the error repeats. The error occurrs at a random location some 10 to ~60s into the track. Stereo playback is ok for all sample rates. Today I installed setup 2, same result. I think I have ruled out all software errors. I know the audio files are ok. Tested with identical results using two well reknowned players (Foobar2000 and JRiver Media Center). Latest LynxTwo driver 2.00 Build 019c (tested earlier versions as well), ASIO playback. Is there a way to detect hardware errors? Driver errors? Any help is greatly welcomed! |

Hi, what motherboard is in the new computer? Was the old computer the same OS as the new one or different?

I was just thinking along the same lines, if it has something to do with other hardware than Lynx. Problem is that I am not an expert. OS is the same Win7 64 Pro.
The old motherboard was Asus M3A-H/HDMI
The new one is ASUS P8Z68 DELUXE |

*Bump* Do you have any reports on the applicability of the ASUS mobo I am using?

so you can confirm that this motherboard works in your setup with multichannel audio source with 96kHz sample rate or higher? It does in my setup also - for a few seconds. I am just trying to figure out whether this is a driver thing or a hardware failure in one of the Lynx components (either the L2B or the Aurora8).

You never said what audio software you are using and what audio API you are using (ASIO, DirectSound, MME, WASAPI).
Also, there is a GEN3 version of that motherboard. Are you using that? |

I am using JRiver Media Center 17, always with ASIO driver (is that the correct term?). I use always use Lynx mixer for volume control, with analog output directly into power ampls. I did try to use DirectSound and WASAPI to rule out any ASIO driver issues, but I get error messages when trying more than two channel audio at these high sample rates. I also tested with Foobar2000 with multichannel flac decoder plugin. Exactly same result. My audio source is always flac files. I have some very good recordings from www.2l.no, and they have been listened to many times with setup 1 (see first post) on my old computer running the same software and API. No problems then. With the new computer, I run into this problem with either of these two setups, and also when playing only through Lynx2B. It also happens if I upsample and upmix any stereo audio stream from e.g 2.0 16/44.1 to 2.1 24/96 or 5.1 24/96. I did this test to rule out faulty audio files. The other way around - if I downsample the native 5.1 24/96 tracks to e.g. 5.1 24/88.2 or 24/48, problem is gone. That is not how I want to use my Lynx gear, though.... Also, if I play back the native 24/96 5.1 tracks with L2B/A8 sample rate set to 88.2 or 48, problem was also gone (even if it sounded funny).
Not sure, I did not find any specification in the technical specification. How do I find out?

Have you tried not using the ASIO driver, but using WASAPI and setting the Speaker Configuration to 5.1?
![]() Just select your device (should show as LynxTWO-B where mine says Lynx AES16e) and press the Configure button... ![]() Next select 5.1 Surround then press Next a few times. In Lynx Mixer you should see the Play 01+02 Device change to "32-bit 5.1" from Stereo. This will confirm the device is in 5.1 mode. Now you should be able to select the Play 01+02 device (or Speakers depending on your OS). Please try this as a trouble-shooting step and let us know the results. Thanks, I tried that just now. I set Configuration to 7.1, and Windows audio properties to 24/96. In Lynx mixer Settings->Advanced-Play 1 multichannel mode showed 7.1. Or Stereo or 5.1 according to Windows Configuration settings, so this works.
Using DirectSound I managed to get playback for at least one hour! The problem with DS is pops and skips, making the sound really terrible, so it is not a permanent solution. With ASIO, the few seconds of playback I get is at least smooth and great sounding
![]() Wasapi does still not work. Switched back to ASIO and problem returned; after a few seconds audio went dead. Edited by OlavK - March/23/2012 at 12:05pm |

Ok, new observation. I tried 7.1 playback with ASIO after setting windows configuration to 7.1. Earlier I have always neglected the Windows configuration, it have just worked.
And it seemed stable for a while. Bot no, after 10-15 minutes, audio went dead again.
Another observation is that the media software seems to notice what happens. It is not only the audio that is silenced, but playback actually stops. This could of course point to media software bug, but I find it hard to believe both JRiver and Foobar2000 having the same bug.

So is your motherboard this one:
http://usa.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_1155/P8Z68_DELUXEGEN3/ or this one: http://usa.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_1155/P8Z68_DELUXE/ |

On the Asus web site, GEN3 has the text "P8Z68 DELUXEGEN3" printed on the motherboard itself. My mobo does not, it only says "P8Z68 DELUXE". I guess that means I do not have GEN3. Comparing the specs of the two, GEN3 supports 22nm Intel CPUs, while mine supports 32nm.

No ideas regarding my choice of motherboard (which was actually based solely on 1) it supported i7 and it has two PCI slots)?
I have a FW interface on my Aurora. I have never used it, but I will try using it to see if I get into the same problem. If not, I guess the problem is isolated to either the L2B or the motherboard/PCI interface. On the other hand, if I get the same result, would this indicate hardware failure? This test will be limited to 96kHz, right? Or does FW support all the way up to 192kHz? I will post the results here.

Hi,
Our latest firmware on LT-FW does limit the card to 16 channels at 96KHz. Edited by Mike N - March/29/2012 at 10:14am |

Ok. My plan is to test FW with the IEEE1394 plug on my computer. Is that a good idea, or do you require a native FW interface in the computer? I want to know before I try, since I need to mount the LT-FW expansion card inside the Aurora.

Usually the onboard 1394 ports are OK.
