Thank you, Paul.  I finally get it.  With LT-* it's either/or.  With LS-* it is in addition to the existing channels.  Glad I didn't keep the Onyx.

You would not gain 8 channels, you would just gain ADAT as a format alternative to AES.

That's too bad.  I already returned the Onyx.  I just couldn't justify switching to 48kHz.

It's not just the distance between the control room and the computer room, it's also the lack of a way to route an ADAT cable between the two.  The guys who framed my walls did not adhear to the specification of leaving a couple inches between the double walls.  This made it impossible to route "smurf" tubing between the control room and the computer room.

All I have are DVI, USB, FW and a few Cat5e cable runs between the two rooms.

So, if I were to get an 8 channel pre amp with ADAT outputs would I or would I not gain 8 channels on the Aurora into which I install an LT-ADAT?

Thanks,

Steven

Hmmm, I see. Although 30' is still feasible for Optical cables without a repeater.
That description must be a typo Steven, the LT-ADAT and LS-ADAT support 44.1k as well as 48k based sample rates. Sorry for the confusion.

"In this case you would want an LS-ADAT to add to the AES16e card, NOT an LT-ADAT. "

That won't work for me.  The LS-ADAT goes into the computer which is in the computer room which is over 30' away from the control room and the Auroras.

Besides the fact that I primarily work at sample rates divisible by 44100, not 48000.

I agree with Mo Facta, EXCEPT, with an AES16e and current firmware/drivers you do have 32 independent channels: 16 AES and 16 ADAT. In this case you would want an LS-ADAT to add to the AES16e card, NOT an LT-ADAT.

Hmm,  I don't think the Aurora 16 is capable of passing more than 16 channels of audio so you would be limited to either using the Aurora's digital inputs or the ADAT inputs coming from the Onyx.  I don't think you can use them all together.

In any case, since your LT slot is being used by the ADAT card, how are you getting audio into your computer?  If you're using the AES16e you're still limited to 16 channels anyway.

I think the LT-ADAT card is intended to be used for, 1.  getting digital audio out of the Aurora, and 2. utilizing the DA conversion on the Aurora from another digital source.  I doubt they're for getting more channels out of it.

Cheers :)

I just picked up a used Onyx I hope to be able to use with a (yet to be purchased) LT-ADAT card in order to provide more channels on my main Aurora 16.

I just did a search on this forum which resulted in no mention of "onyx".

Any reason why two Onyx's wouldn't be a good way to get an additional 16 channels of input (with full control over output monitoring) on an Aurora 16 equipted with an LT-ADAT?

From their manual: "These two Toslink connectors provide a digital output using the ADAT lightpipe format. At higher sample rates, the signal is multiplexed using the S/MUX format."

Lynx LT-ADAT Expansion Interface for Aurora Converter Features:
  • Two ADAT lightpipe inputs
  • Two ADAT lightpipe outputs
  • Operates at 48kHz, 96kHz, or 192kHz sampling rates
  • Installs internally in L-slot option slot in Aurora 8 or 16 A/D D/A converters
  • Sample clock source can be derived from word clock received by Aurora, or first lightpipe input can be selected as source.
  • Up to 16 channels of ADAT I/O (at 48kHz rate)

Oh - I'd be limited to sample rates divisible by 48k...  ( I currently use 44.1 since that's what goes on CDs).

But other than that?
